Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as an elementary school student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish in the house that belonged to a member of jury. Due to her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
